Improve your website usability: simple tips to consider in your design

By now, I believe you are aware of the benefits of having a website for your business. A website being available online 24×7, helps you to reach local and global customers, generate leads and create new business opportunities. It can not only help save money on marketing and lead generation but also contribute to better customer service.  Here, I present some simple tips from a design and usability perspective to build and improve your online presence with your website.
The key to making the most of your digital web presence is providing a well-designed and user-friendly website that can create a positive user experience for visitors landing on the site from anywhere in the world through search engines or social media.
Balance your page well with graphics, text and white space
Basically when a user enters your website, he starts looking at it from the top left of the page and moves towards the right, as shown by numerous eye-tracking studies and heat maps. While graphics and images capture the attention of the user, they are also looking to get the message quickly. Hence, it is very importance to ensure the page is well-balanced with the right use of text and graphics to make the page more visually appealing for visitors. Balance helps visitors find and read the content easily.  Carefully mix and match the visual elements on the page with white spaces to ensure that the important items can easily stand out.
Use background textures and colours for adequate contrast
Carefully choose the background textures and colour of your website as it has the ability to improve overall look and feel of the website. Using lots of texture and graphics may harm the website as it can make the important text in the website less noticeable. In fact, use background colours in a such a way that there will significant contrast between the text and background. Take special precaution while using brighter and darker colours such as dark blue or red as these colour may shift the focus of the user.
Create easy to use navigation
Navigation plays an important role in the success of a website. Your website should have have an easy to navigate toolbar. You may choose an top navigation such as on this website or on the left side in this example. Ensure that there is always an easy access back to the home page of the website.
Use easy to read fonts and font colours
Readability of the text on a web page is important. Limit the number of font type, font sizes and the font colours you use on a page. For headings and subheadings, use one or two different fonts. If you use the same font, then use a different size to differentiate them. Always be careful when you select the font colours as many designers often ignore the readability of the text against the background colours.
Keep page load time to the minimum
Minimise the load time of every page on your website and make them as fast as you can. Web users are extremely impatient and may leave the site if your pages don’t load fast enough. To reduce load time eliminate unnecessary graphics, especially flash graphics that may cause delays in the opening the page. Also, ask your designers to optimise image sizes as well as the code to improve load time.
